Peleng 8mm F/3.5-16 Fisheye Lens - Quick Review

Intro - Tests - De-Fishing - Conclusion

First Tests

The Peleng is a MANUAL lens - no USM motors or electronics of any kind. This lens will test your skills.

On an APS size sensor like the 300d, you don't get a full-frame image. This is ok for me, but if you want full-frame you'll need a more expensive camera (or use film).

As you can see, you get almost the full width of the fisheye image. The dark corners are the edge of the imaging circle.

Incidentally, on a full frame SLR or 35mm film camera, you don't quite get the full circular image - the top and bottom are very slightly cropped. Apparently the image circle is about 25mm in diameter, and western film is only 24mm wide.

Manual focussing with the 300d is difficult, if not impossible with this lens. Luckily though the depth of field is so huge, for anything but real close up shots you can just set it to infinity and use a high f stop.

For this image the lens is a few inches from the keyboard.

40/s ISO-100, F/16, infinity focus.

Levels adjusted slightly, resized and sharpened a little.

This one taken at 100/s IS0-100, F/16, infinity focus. Look at that flare! The original from the camera was very under exposed - I was trying to stop the sky and sun being completely blown out, which is a bit tricky with the sun so near the centre of the frame.

As a result, I had to give this image some heavy gamma boost to show the detail in the underexposed areas. Anyway, I managed to rescue it to some degree...

This is a problem with any fisheye lens - the field of view is so huge, you're almost certain to get the sun or something else very over exposed.

There's no sharpening on this one - just gamma correction.

This one taken at 50/s IS0-100, F/16, infinity focus. It's a shame about the street lamp - I suppose I could always paint it out.

All I've done to this one is apply a little sharpening. Part of what looks like sun flare is actually an aircraft contrail.

You may notice a dark spot at the top right - this is a bit of dust on my sensor. Time to get the cleaning gear out (again).

This is probably about as sharp as you're going to get from the Peleng. Actually, I think it's pretty good.

Here I'm stood right in the doorway - you can see the door frame at the top and bottom.

I just managed to keep my toes out of the bottom of the frame.

If you don't want the fisheye effect you can always "de-fish" the image in software.
